Sir John Gieve joined the Financial Services Authority Board when he became Deputy Governor, Financial Stability of the Bank of England in January 2006. He is a member of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee, and in addition has specific responsibility for the Bank's work on Financial Stability issues. Before joining the Bank of England Sir John was the Home Office Permanent Secretary from April 2001.

Prior to this, Sir John held various roles at HM Treasury including Managing Director of Finance Regulation and Industry 1998 -2001, Director of Budget and Public Finance 1994-1998, Deputy Director of Budget and Public Finance 1991-1994, Under Secretary to the Banking Group, 1989-1991, Principal Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer 1988-1989, Press Secretary 1986-1988 and he was seconded to 3i as an investment controller 1984-1986

Sir John graduated from New College Oxford in 1971 before starting his career in the Civil Service in 1974 working in the Department of Education.[1]
