Afzal Amin
Afzal Amin is a former army officer who stood as a 2015 general election candidate for the Conservative Party in the marginal Labour-held Dudley North constituency but was forced to resign two months before the election.
EDL phony march plot
In March 2015 former English Defence League (EDL) leader Tommy Robinson revealed that Amin had been in talks with him to arrange a phony EDL protest march against the proposed building of a mosque in Dudley. The plan was that it would be called off so Amin could take credit for defusing the situation. Amin however denied he had come up with the EDL march plan, insisting it had been Robinson's idea.[1]
Sharing EDL views
Footage showed Amin saying that: 'he agreed with “95 per cent” of the positions taken by the EDL and would act as a “very strong, unshakeable ally” of the group should he be elected'. He refused to answer allegations by Robinson however that he had an un-named wealthy backer who had offered financial support to Robinson. [1]
After being suspended by the Conservative Party, Amin resigned as an election candidate.[2]
