The post of UK Representative in Northern Ireland was created in 1969 to represent the views of the British Government to the Northern Ireland Government, to report to the Home Secretary on views of Northern Ireland ministers and on the situation in Northern Ireland, and to liaise with the General Officer Commanding on matters of internal security. It was in existence until the advent of direct rule in 1972.[1]
