Sammy Stein (born October 1946 as Samuel Aaron Steinschreiber) is a leading Scottish Zionist activist and the longtime chairperson of Glasgow Friends of Israel (GFI).[1][2]

Early life

Sammy Stein's parents were born in Hungary and Poland and moved to Palestine in the 1930s, where they met and married and where Sammy was born. His father discovered that his brother had survived the Holocaust and was living in Glasgow, where he had established Steinschreiber the Butcher. The family moved to Scotland in 1957 to help run the business. They became members of Queens Park Shul, where Sammy and his brother joined the choir.[1]

Sammy Stein returned to Israel in 1969. As an Israeli citizen, he served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for five years before returning to Glasgow, where he pursued a career in IT.[2][1]

Zionist activism

Glasgow Friends of Israel (GFI) was established in 2015 following the 2014 Gaza War amid increased anti-Israel rhetoric in UK media. GFI's main activity has been its weekly peace advocacy stall on Buchanan Street in Glasgow, where members of the public engage in discussions about the Israel-Palestine conflict.[1]

Sammy Stein has served as chairperson of Glasgow Friends of Israel since 2016 and is the group's most prominent public spokesperson. He regularly coordinates and mans the central Glasgow street information stall.[2][1]

He has been a member of the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council (Rep Council) and remains an active member of the Glasgow Jewish community. He has two daughters and two grandchildren in Glasgow.[2]
