Relation to Zionism

King David High School celebrating the anniversary of the settler colonial entity of 'Israel' with the UJIA.

In Liverpool's King David High School as of January 2023, it was reported by the Board of Deputies that “There are 752 pupils on roll, of whom 11% are Jewish, whilst the majority are Roman Catholic (30%), Church of England (25%) [or] other Christian denominations (18%)”.[1] 5% of the pupils are Muslim. And yet the school insists on ramming the racist ideology of Zionism down the throats of all the pupils Jewish and non Jewish alike. This school has been Zionist since the beginning. It was here in 1972 that the prominent anti-Zionist Tony Greenstein made his first steps towards anti-Zionism, when he was expelled from the school.[2] He reports that the school was steeped in the Zionist ethos. “We never even heard the word Palestinian”, he said.[3] Today the ethos of the school encourages “positive identification as being part of the Jewish family, Israel etc.”[4] Students study “Israel in Geography” have “the opportunity for Year 9 pupils to experience living at Kibbutz Lavi, as well as prospective annual trips to Israel”.[4] There is an Israel club and tutor groups are named after “four regions of Israel”. The school marks “Israel Independence Day” and involves “an Israeli-style breakfast” and “some sort of celebration”.[4]

  • 'As part of the celebrations of Israel’s 70 years of independence, Year 8 and 9 pupils have been participating in a competition, co-ordinated by UJIA, to design display items that represent Israel’s independence. Year 8 pupils have been working on lyrics for a King David National Anthem. Year 9 pupils have designed pop-up books, written stories and created souvenirs based on Jewish people migrating to Israel during the early years of independence. If successful in the competition, our display items may be sent to Israel to be displayed in museums over there.'[5]
  • 'Re: Israel Trip 2017: The Jewish Studies Department, together with Leeds Free Jewish School, is organising a trip to Israel… Activities will include visiting historic sites, theme parks and shopping. The trip will be open initially to those pupils in Years 8, 9 and 10.’[6]
  • ‘subjects covered in school are often important in the longer time span, e.g. the significance of the Talmud and Mishna, the importance of keeping Shabbat, Kashrut, festival observance, positive identification as being part of the Jewish family, Israel etc.’[7]
  • ‘Strands of the Jewish ethos and values permeates all aspects of the school, with topics such as … Israel in Geography’[7]
  • ‘At King David, we believe in an immersive education, which we achieve by offering a multitude of school trips throughout the year, including the opportunity for Year 9 pupils to experience living at Kibbutz Lavi, as well as prospective annual trips to Israel and a partnership with the Menachem School in St Petersburg, Russia.’ [7]
  • ‘There are also a series of visits planned for pupils across all year groups in association with various agencies in order to extend and deepen the students’ understanding of their Jewish roots and identity. Informal activities are also offered at lunchtime such as … our Israel club.’ [7]
  • ‘The tutor groups are named after four regions of Israel and the school badge has a different colour depending on which house a pupil is assigned to.’ [7]
