Sir George Iacobescu is the chairman and CEO of the Canary Wharf Group.
Career
Iacobescu's career began in his home land of Romania, working for British company Wimpey developing pumping stations. He then moved to Canada and took up a number of engineering jobs.
In 1978 he joined Olympia & York and was taken under the wing of its founder Paul Reichmann.
He then moved to New York to work on the World Financial Centre and was then part of the elite team that was sent to London to work on Canary Wharf. By 1991 Olympia & York had built 4.5 million square feet of offices at Canary Wharf but has also spent close to £2 billion on infrastructure, however the development ground to halt when the recession struck and the company ended up bankrupt. As a result of the bankruptcy a new company was formed called Canary Wharf Group and Iacobescu was appointed chief executive in 1997.[1]

On 1 April 2015 Iacobescu was one of 103 business leaders who wrote to the Telegraph praising the British Conservative Party's economic policies and claiming a Labour government would 'threaten jobs and deter investment' in the UK.[2]
