This article is part of the Health Portal project of Spinwatch. |
According to their website, “The Whittemore Peterson Institute for Neuro Immune Disease exists to bring discovery, knowledge, and effective treatments to patients with illnesses that are caused by acquired dysregulation of both the immune system and the nervous system, often resulting in life long disease and disability.”[1].
The WPI is located on the University of Nevada's Medical School campus in Reno, Nevada. Also working on the project is the Nevada Cancer Institute. In August 2010, the Centre for Molecular Medicine was opened on the grounds costing $77 million. The website cites funding from “a combination of University research grants, private contributions to the WPI, and public funding from the state of Nevada.”[2]
The WPI discovered human retrovirus XMRV in 95% of ME/ CS patients in 2010.[3]
