When war broke out he was appointed minister of supply, and acted as a secret emmisary for the British war cabinet in negotiations with both Ireland and the United States. He led George Weston Limited and its various subsidiaries and associated companies, including Associated British Foods, for half a century and established one of the world’s largest food processing and distribution concerns.
