− | Immediately following the general election, [[Joan MacNaughton]], the Director-General for Energy in the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), wrote a memo for the incoming Minister for Energy [[Malcolm Wicks]]. The memo stated that there was a need to look at building more nuclear power stations quickly to avoid a very sharp fall in nuclear contribution to energy supplies. Furthermore, the memo promoted the need for a rapid decision on nuclear as it stated 'bearing in mind that it is generally easier to push ahead on controversial issues early in a new Parliament'.
