- 17 - Loyalists shoot Sean McParland in North Belfast. He dies of his injuries on 25 February.[1] Policing Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan would later link RUC "informant 1" Mark Haddock to the killing.[2]
May
- 8 - 76-year-old Roseanne Mallonis killed by two Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) gunmen who open fire on a rural property at Cullenrammer Road, Dungannon.[3]
- 17 - Building workers Eamon Fox and Gary Convie shot dead by the UVF in Tiger's Bay, Belfast.[4] Policing Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan would later link RUC "informant 1" Mark Haddock to the killings.[5]
- 23 RUC Special Branch receives information from an informant identifying Billy Wright as one of the killers of Roseanne Mallon.[3]
June
- 17 - Taxi driver Gerald Brady shot dead by the UVF outside Carrickfergus.[6] Policing Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan would later link RUC "informant 1" Mark Haddock to the killing.[7]

- 1 - An internal Home Office briefing note of this date summarised the results of discussions on agent-handling as follows: "The Northern Ireland Secretary and the Attorney, with some support from the Defence Secretary, argued strongly that a statutory solution was necessary. The Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary, the Home Secretary and the Chancellor of the Exchequer all expressed grave reservations about opening up such a sensitive area to Parliament when the slenderness of the Government's majority could not guarantee a satisfactory outcome." It added: "Given Ministers' declared view and the new context created by the Joint Declaration we have endorsed the NIO view that the issue is best played long."[8]
