Archibald John Norman (born 1 May 1954), known as Archie Norman, is a businessman and former Conservative politician. He is a co-founder of Policy Exchange and its now defunct sister organisation CChange.
Education and business career
Norman attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he studied economics. After graduating in 1975 he joined Citibank, where he worked until 1977. He was awarded an MBA in economics from Harvard Business School in 1979 and joined the management consultancy company McKinsey. [1]
In 1986 he was appointed finance director of Woolworth Holdings plc (later renamed Kingfisher plc). He was also Chairman of the company's property subsidiary Chartwell Land plc until 1991. That year he was appointed chief executive of Asda. He headed the company until 1996 and then served as Chairman from 1997 to 2000. [2] In 1997 he was elected Conservative MP for Tunbridge Wells, He was chief executive and deputy chairman of the Conservative Party from 1997 to 1999. He was a Shadow Minister in William Hague's Shadow Cabinet, serving as Shadow Minister for Europe 1999-2000 and Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Transport and the Regions 2000-01. [3]
