The Marconi Company was founded by Guglielmo Marconi in 1897 as the Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company (sometimes presented as the Wireless Telegraph Trading Signal Company). It was renamed the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company in 1900 and the Marconi Company in 1963.[1]
As the defence division of the General Electric Company (GEC) since 1968, it was renamed GEC-Marconi in 1987 and Marconi Electronic Systems (MES) in 1998. Marconi Electronic Systems became part of BAE Systems in 1999.
The Marconi Company is historically linked to but is not the same as the Marconi Corporation. The Marconi Corporation was created in 1999 by the renaming of the General Electric Company (GEC), minus the Marconi Electronic Systems business. The business arm of Marconi Corporation was renamed Telent in 2006.[2] Telent is a communications and security systems corporation.[3]
