Jim Higgins, MEP

Jim Higgins (born 04 May 1945, Ballyhaunis) is an Irish MEP for North-West from Fine Gael since 2004.[1]

  • Chairman of Fine Gael Parliamentary Party (1994); former member of party's national executive.
  • Vice-Chairman of Mayo County Council (1980-1981).
  • In the Irish Parliament: Opposition Chief Whip (1988); spokesman on education (1991); spokesman on justice, equality and law reform (1997); spokesman on public enterprise and tourism (2000).
  • Minister of State at the Department of Finance (1995).
  • Minister of State at the Department of Defence and Government Chief Whip (1995-1997).
  • Member of the Council of Europe (2002- 2004).
  • In Junior Chamber Ireland: debating champion (1977, 1978); captain of debating team that won the International Tripartite Championship.
