:Daniel Marston is a Research Fellow at the [[Strategic and Defence Studies Centre]] at the Australian National University. He has focused on the topic of how armies learn and reform as a central theme in his academic research. His first book Phoenix from the Ashes, an in-depth assessment of how the British/Indian Army turned defeat into victory in the Burma campaign of the Second World War, won the Templer Medal Book Prize in 2003. His article “Lost and Found in the Jungle: The Indian Army and British Army Tactical Doctrines for Burma, 1943-45 and Malaya, 1948-1960” (published in Big Wars and Small Wars: The British Army and the Lessons of War in the 20th Century, edited by Hew Strachan) expanded this enquiry to British counter-insurgency tactics in the Malayan Emergency. He was a Senior Lecturer in War Studies at [[Royal Military Academy Sandhurst]].
