Background
Heald has been a long standing member within parliament and over the last twenty years he has taken on a variety of jobs within Westminster. His first role saw him stand as the Conservative candidate for Southwark and Bermondsey in the General Election of 1987, while in 1992 he succeeded Ian Stewart as MP for North Hertfordshire. [4]
In 1994 he was appointed parliamentary private secretary to William Waldegrave, then the secretary of state for agriculture, fisheries and food. [1] Whilst in 1995 he moved on to become a minister in the Department of Social Security where he led the Government's campaign against benefit fraud. [5]
After the General Election of 1997, he then spent a period in the opposition whips' office. Early in 2000, Heald was appointed shadow home affairs spokesman and in September 2001 he became the shadow health minister. [4]
In November 2002 Heald then worked as shadow minister for work and pensions and between November 2003 and May 2005 he served as the shadow leader of the house.
In July 2007 Heald decided to return to the back benches after 13 years’ continuous service on the Conservative Front Bench. [5]
In September 2012 Heald however returned to Government when he was appointed as Her Majesty's Solicitor General for England and Wales. [4]
Education
Heald studied Law at the University of Cambridge.
