In 2009 Phillips was made a Queen's Counsel. After he was elected in 2010 he chose to continue to work as a QC in private practice. In 2014 Phillips earned £249,128 according to the Guardian for his legal work alone. [3] Phillips defended his decision to continue working as a QC on the basis that he 'largely works when the House of Commons is not sitting'. He believes it 'makes him a better MP as the House of Commons is, after all, making law.' [4]
