Studied Law at Oxford. 1976, called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn; until 1983, Barrister, specializing in employment and industrial law. 1983, elected Member of Parliament; 1985, Member of the Treasury front bench team; 1987, Spokesperson on Trade and Industry with special responsibility for Consumer Affairs and the City; 1988, elected to the Shadow Cabinet and appointed Shadow Home Secretary of State for Energy; 1989, appointed Shadow Home Secretary; 1992, elected to and 1994, Leader, Labour Party's National Executive Committee.[1]
