Glenis Willmott, MEP

Glenis Willmott (born 04 March 1951, Horden Co. Durham) is a British MEP (01.01.2006- ) for East Midlands from the Labour Party.[1]

EU moves closer to counting calories in alcoholic drinks

In April 2015 the European Parliament took its first steps towards introducing legislation for nutritional labelling to be present on all alcoholic drinks by 2016. So far adopted by 63 of the 68 members of the parliament's health committee, the resolution also calls for labels to highlight the dangers of alcohol for both pregnant women and motorists. [2]

Wilmott has been key in steering this proposal through the committee following its first failings in 2011. She believes that 'Consumers have a right to know that a glass of wine has the same number of calories as a slice of cake and that drinking while pregnant can harm your baby'. But also says that 'this isn't about telling people what to do but giving them the information they need to make informed choices'. [2]
