Freedom of Information Request 1
- Does your institution provide any information or advice to students or staff on any potential liability under Terrorism legislation which might result from accessing materials for teaching or research? If so please provide copies of any documents held which detail or refer to such information or advice.
- No.
- Does your institution have any kind of procedure to review or assess reading lists, module descriptors or other teaching materials which explicitly or in practice considers questions of safety and risk under terrorism legislation as part of its remit?
- No. In certain instances concerns over teaching materials have been notified to the Secretary to Council & Academic Secretary but there is no formal monitoring system. There are standard QA procedures for module approval but with no specific guidelines relating to terrorism.
- Does your institution have any system, policy or procedure in place for dealing with any potential actions taken by the authorities against the institution, its students or staff under Terrorism legislation?
- No
- Does your institution have any system, policy or procedure in place for preventing violent extremism?
- There is no dedicated system or procedure for dealing with violent extremism. However, some actions have been taken which discuss the issues that were raised in the DIUS document. These were discussed at the meetings of the Student Support Committee (SSC) of 5th February 2008 and 29th May 2008. I attach the relevant sections from the minutes of those meetings and the papers presented. The Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech is currently being reviewed but you can see the current version here. In addition the document attached called 'Self Assessment' was a recent response to the Dept. for Business, Innovation and Skills which was making funds available to selected universities.[2]
