Foundations UK is a charity that provides education and training in nutrition, diet, exercise, fitness and body image, by viewing obesity as a psychological and behavioural problem. [1]

It works with families, businesses, schools, public sector agencies and professional practitioners, and is 'dedicated to helping individuals develop a capacity for self-care through healthy eating and exercise.' Founded in 2004, its strapline is: 'guiding young people to sustainable health'. [2]

Activities

Foundations UK runs one-day courses to assist health professionals in becoming more effective in both one-to-one and group interventions with patients regarding weight management.

People

Foundations UK's founder and chief executive Mary Wood is a UKCP registered psychotherapist with over 11 years of experience in the field of eating problems. [3] In a 2007 interview with the Nursing Times she said:

A lot of government thinking is very didactic,’ she says. ‘Rather than telling people to eat five fruit or veg a day, it would be better to say “eat slowly, sociably and sit down”. It is how we eat, not the content of our food that we need to change.’‘Patients get caught in very different sorts of vicious circles including cultural reasons, mindless eating or the diet sheet/guilt cycle. Understanding their motivation must be part of the process. The health professional is not the manager but the facilitator.’ [4]

Trustees

Former trustees

  • Baroness Delyth Morgan - a founding trustee, resigned January 2007 upon assuming her appointment as government whip in the House of Lords. Became the charity's patron
  • Sir Nicholas Wilson - a founding trustee, resigned 6 June 2007 upon assuming his appointment as Lord Justice of Appeal. [5]
