Sandra Ruth Dangoor (also known as Sandra Dangoor) is a British former City of London stockbroker and philanthropist of Iraqi Jewish descent. She holds trusteeships and advisory roles with organisations focused on Sephardi/Mizrahi heritage, medical care in Israel, and Jewish communal advocacy, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States.[1]
Career and communal roles
Dangoor previously worked as a stockbroker in the City of London before moving into philanthropic and communal leadership.[2]
She serves as a trustee of Sephardi Voices UK, which records and preserves oral histories of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa.[2] She is also a trustee of the UK Friends of Herzog Hospital, the British fundraising arm of the Jerusalem-based medical centre specialising in geriatric, psychiatric and respiratory care.[2]
Additional roles include membership of the Advisory Board of the National Jewish Assembly (NJA); service on the Board of Elders of Lauderdale Road Synagogue (part of the S&P Sephardi Community); and a trusteeship with HARIF, the UK association promoting the history, culture and heritage of Jews from North Africa and the Middle East.[2]
She is listed as a member of the Advisory Board of the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States.[1]
Family
Sandra Dangoor is a member of the extended UK branch of the prominent Iraqi Jewish Dangoor family, which traces its ancestry to Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor, a former Chief Rabbi of Baghdad.[3]
She is the sister of Robert Philip Dangoor. Their father was Albert Dangoor (1918–2005); their mother was Doreen. Albert is recorded as survived by his wife Doreen, children Sandra and Robert, and grandchildren Natasha and Lisa.[4] Legal proceedings further identify an uncle named Niazi Dangoor, who established the Sharet Trust for the benefit of Robert and Sandra Dangoor.[5]
Sandra Dangoor and her brother belong to the wider cousin network of the sons of the late Sir Naim Eliahou Dangoor CBE (1914–2015). Family photographs published in The Scribe show Sandra appearing alongside David Dangoor, Michael Dangoor, Robert Dangoor (son of Sir Naim) and Elie Dangoor, described in the captions as cousins.[6]
Her first cousins therefore include the British businessmen and philanthropists David Alan Ezra Dangoor CBE (Exilarch of the Exilarch’s Foundation), and his brothers Michael Dangoor, Robert Dangoor (to whom David later donated a kidney; died 2022) and Elie Dangoor.[6][7]
Within the Iraqi Jewish communal network in London, Sandra and her brother Robert appear with this circle of cousins in historical family chronicles of The Scribe – Journal of Babylonian Jewry.[6][4]
