Sandra Ruth Dangoor (also known as Sandra Dangoor) is a British former City of London stockbroker and philanthropist of Iraqi Jewish descent. She holds trusteeships and advisory roles with organisations focused on Sephardi/Mizrahi heritage, medical care in Israel, and Jewish communal advocacy, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States.[1]
Career and communal roles
Dangoor previously worked as a stockbroker in the City of London before moving into philanthropic and communal leadership.[2]
She serves as a trustee of Sephardi Voices UK, which records and preserves oral histories of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa.[2] She is also a trustee of the UK Friends of Herzog Hospital, the British fundraising arm of the Jerusalem-based medical centre specialising in geriatric, psychiatric and respiratory care.[2]
Additional roles include membership of the Advisory Board of the National Jewish Assembly (NJA); service on the Board of Elders of Lauderdale Road Synagogue (part of the S&P Sephardi Community); and a trusteeship with HARIF, the UK association promoting the history, culture and heritage of Jews from North Africa and the Middle East.[2]
She is listed as a member of the Advisory Board of the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States.[1]
Family
Dangoor belongs to the prominent Dangoor family, an Iraqi Jewish lineage with roots in Baghdad. The family includes the late Sir Naim Eliahou Dangoor CBE (1914–2015), a businessman and philanthropist who founded the Exilarch’s Foundation and was a major supporter of education, health and Iraqi Jewish heritage causes in the United Kingdom and Israel; his wife Renée Dangoor (née Dangoor; 1925–2008), who was crowned Miss Baghdad/Miss Iraq in 1947; and their sons, among them the philanthropist and communal leader David Dangoor CBE DL.[3][4]
The wider Dangoor family traces its ancestry to Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor, a former Chief Rabbi of Baghdad, and to Eliahou Dangoor, who operated one of the largest Arabic printing presses. Family members left Iraq amid the deterioration of conditions for Jews in the mid-20th century and rebuilt their lives and businesses in Britain, where they have been active in Sephardi communal institutions, education, medical research and interfaith work.[3]
Sandra Dangoor’s public activity centres on Sephardi heritage preservation, medical philanthropy linked to Israel, and support for Jewish communal organisations in the United Kingdom, consistent with the broader family’s long-standing pattern of communal engagement.
