Remarks

Calderwood Jewish Education is an inactive Registered Charity based in Scotland. Removed from the Scottish Charity Register on 02 June 2012. This organisation's identifier is GB-SC-SC012937.[1] Calderwood Jewish Education (Scottish charity number SC012937) was a small Scottish charity registered on 16 November 2004 and removed from the Scottish Charity Register on 2 June 2012. Its objects were the advancement of Jewish education, the advancement of Judaism, and the advancement of Jewish heritage and culture.

The charity's primary role was to administer and oversee the Hebrew and Jewish Studies department at Calderwood Lodge Jewish Primary School in Giffnock, Glasgow, ensuring the delivery of Orthodox Jewish education within the school.

History and activities

The charity was established to support Jewish studies at Calderwood Lodge, Scotland’s only Jewish primary school. It operated as the governing body for the religious education component of the curriculum, working alongside East Renfrewshire Council (the local authority responsible for the school).

The charity was dissolved in 2012 as the school became fully integrated into the local authority denominational school structure. Oversight of Jewish studies subsequently passed to the school itself, with ongoing support from the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council and local synagogues.

Trustees and key individuals

No complete public list of trustees is available in OSCR records.

The most prominent individual associated with oversight of Jewish education at Calderwood Lodge during and after the charity’s existence is debt collector Adam Lewis. He sent his children to the school and served on the board responsible for Jewish studies oversight during the transition period to full local authority control. Adam Lewis later became Chair of the Glasgow Jewish Community Trust in June 2023.

Funding

The charity was funded mainly through donations from the Glasgow Jewish community, parents, and occasional grants from larger Jewish philanthropic bodies. Recorded support includes grants from:

Dissolution and asset transfer

The charity was removed from the register on 2 June 2012. There is no public record of a formal transfer of assets to the Glasgow Jewish Community Trust. Instead, the functions of Jewish studies oversight were absorbed directly into the school’s management under East Renfrewshire Council, with continued community support from the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council and local synagogues.
