:Bill McCarthy graduated from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1983 with a first class honours degree in Chemistry. From September 1983 to August 1994, he worked at the [[Atomic Weapons Establishment]] (AWE) Aldermaston, where his duties included the analysis of radionuclides in a variety of environmental media and radiation detection studies.
:Currently in the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), he has worked in the field of nuclear safeguards since August 1994.
