Sir Edward Du Cann was Conservative MP for Taunton from 1956-1987. He served as Economic Secretary to the Treasury and Minister of State at the Board of Trade in 1963-64. He became chairman of the Conservative Party in 1964 after the Labour election victory that year. He was chairman of the 1922 Committee for 12 years from 1972. He was chairman of the merchant bank Keyser Ullman from 1970 to 1975. He was deputy chairman of mortgage broker Homes Assured until 1989 and chairman of Lonhro until 1991.[1]
