Edward Jay Epstein is an American investigative journalist.[1]

Epstein was a friend of James Angleton, and had a number of sources among the 'intelligence fundamentalists' surrounding the former CIA counterintelligence chief. Journalist Tom Mangold argues that articles by Epstein in 1978 tipped off the Soviets that GRU officer Dmitriy Polyakov was spying for the Americans. This led to the execution of Polyakov, who the fundamentalists had assumed to be part of a Soviet deception operation.[2]
