Colin Luther Powell, (date of birth 5th May 1937, Harlem (Manhattan) New York). Married Alma Johnson on the 25th August 1962 with whom he has a son Michael Kevin Powell, who is chairman of the Federal Communication Commission.

Education

He graduated form Morris High School in 1954. He went on to attain a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from the City College of New York. In 1971 he graduated from George Washington University with a Mater of Business Administration degree. .[1]

Career/Positions Held

Most notably:

Powell became the 65th United States Secretary of State in 2001; he remained in this position till 2005. He was the first African American to gain this position.[2]

He was not only a politician but a professional soldier. He was a 4 star general in the United States Army, a position which he rose to after being 2nd lieutenant for 35 years.[3]

Timeline: He was a captain during the Vietnam War. In the early 1980’s he became a senior military assistant to Secretary of Defense Caspar Willard Weinberger. From 1987 to 1989 he acted as Ronald Reagan’s National Security Advisor President Bush selected him as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.[4]

  • He had the critical job of creating and strengthening relations with other countries, with the ideal of the War on Terror (following 9/11) becoming a worldwide success. He was scrutinised heavily for his part in creating the case for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. [5]

Secretary of State in 2001, he retired from this position in 2005.
