Club de Madrid
Club de Madrid is an elite organization bringing together former government officials, academics, think tankers and journalists to develop a common agenda, its facilitating propaganda, and provide opinion and policy recommendations. Relations with OpenDemocracy
There has been a steady process of merging OpenDemocracy with Club de Madrid. First, it seems (as of Dec. 2007) that OpenDemocracy.org has become the mouthpiece for the elite-grouping Club de Madrid. Initially Club de Madrid/Madrid11.net were elite organs meant offer opinion, policy advice and propaganda on:
- rail against "terrorism" (the "11" in the title of Madrid11 refers to the date of the terrorist attack on Madrid);
- align elite European opinion with the US
At its inception, most of the Club de Madrid's efforts were devoted to the first item on the list, and for that purpose they had a dedicated website and staff. This was merged into terrorism.opendemocracy.org (for some time Madrid11.net pointed to the latter website), and eventually to avoid becoming a single issue website/organ, it further merged into opendemocracy.org (on 29 December 2007 Madrid11 points to OpenDemocracy.org). The latter is today mostly a platform where many of the Club de Madrid-listed academics, think tankers, like-minded journalists, and "ex"-government/intelligence officials can write about international issues.
