Mobbs joined Slough Estates in 1961 becoming managing director ten years later. Slough started with a syndicate of businessmen who bought an ex-Army site from the government that included Sir (later Lord) Percival Perry, the founder of Aims of Industry and the managing director of the U.K. branch of the Ford Motor Company, and Noel Mobbs (later Sir), founder of the Slough Trading Company.
Mobbs joined Barclays in 1973 becoming chairman from 85-86. He was on the DTI panel on deregulation 1988. Slough features highly on his areas of interest from his presidency of the Chamber of Commerce (1969-72), Mobbs was also Vice-president of the British Chambers of Commerce in 1976 and the British Property Federation (1979-81) and a member of the Council of the Institute of Directors.
He was also chairman of Bovis Homes, and a director of Howard de Walden Estates, which owns 120 acres of central London, and of Cookson Group. A "notably robust proponent of free enterprise", Mobbs was chairman of the Right-wing pressure group Aims for Industry, treasurer of the Conservative Party, deputy chairman of the Airey Neave Trust, and chairman of the council of Britain's only private university at Buckingham. Mobbs was appointed Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant for Buckinghamshire in 1997, and in 1998 he took the first steps to create The Buckinghamshire Foundation of which he became the President. Other patrons include: Cilla Black OBE, The Rt Hon the Lord Carrington KG GCMG CH JP DL, Lord Laing of Dunphail, Lucinda Lambton, The Hon Sir William McAlpine Bt, Michael Mobbs and Sir Terry Wogan KBE.
At the Institute for Economic Affairs in June 2000 Mobbs presented the Aims of Industry Free Enterprise Awards (with remarks by Lord Forsyth and Mike Fisher).
