Black is a former political journalist in the Houses of Parliament, working as a lobby correspondent for the Press Association, political correspondent for the Sun[1], political editor of The News of the World and chief political correspondent of The Sunday Times.

He was sacked from The Sunday Times after falling out with editor David Cracknell, having his stories described as "unattributable" by managing editor Richard Caseby and refusing to move to the job of defence correspondent.[2]

He was then head of media and director of trade and government relations at DLA Piper between July 2004 and September 2013.

In September 2013 he became a partner at Newgate Communications, working for the UK public affairs team under Simon Nayyar.[3]
