Yaakov Peri
Yaakov Peri was Director of Israel's Shin Bet security agency between the years 1988-1995.[1]
Early life
Yaakov Peri was born in 1944 in Tel Aviv, and following his army service he studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University, earned a B.A. in Middle East studies and Jewish history.[1]
Shin Bet career
Peri was recruited into the Shin Bet in 1966 and trained as a field officer in the Arab sector. In 1972 he was appointed to a senior position in the 'Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria Command' covering the West Bank. He became head of the ISA Training Division in 1975. He was appointed head of the Northern Command in 1978, and in 1981 moved to head the 'Jerusalem, Judah and Samaria Command'.[1]
He was appointed deputy director of the Shin Bet in 1987 in the wake of the Bus 300 Affair.[2] In 1988 he was appointed Shin Bet Director.[1]
During his tenure Peri, was involved in negotiating security arrangements with the Palestinians as part of the Oslo accords.[2]
In 1994, he left for a period of study in Harvard University, where he completed a degree in economics and business management in the business school. He retired from the Shin Bet in 1995.[1]
