Chartered Institute of Public Relations Awards

It is an ‘honour and a privilege’ for PR professionals to be shortlisted – or even better win accolades – at the CIPR Pride Awards. Hailed in the industry as the ‘PR Oscars’, this glitzy ceremony recognises excellence and rewards achievement in public relations and communications. Winners are guaranteed a higher profile, helping them win new business and retain clients.[1] This was certainly the case for Golley Slater Public Relations, who won a Gold Award in 2007 in the Public Sector category for ‘The Army – Gatekeeper Influencer Campaign.’ The operation aimed to influence ‘gatekeepers’ – parents and teachers – to recommend an Army career to children and pupils, despite the negative press on the Army’s involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Golley Slater eclipsed war stories on military deaths, soldiers lacking equipment and the ongoing debate over the conflicts with a pro-active, positive spin campaign emphasizing the benefits and opportunities of being in the Army: sport, pay, travel, adventure and family benefits. As a result, 197 items of positive media coverage were generated across print media, radio and TV, with a PR value of just over £500,000.[2] Unsurprisingly, the Army is still one of the agency’s clients.[3]

The CIPR Scotland Pride Awards 2008 took place at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh on 20 November. Tickets were priced at £89 (plus vat), which included the red carpet, champagne reception, three courses, a four-hour presentation, and post-ceremony networking in the foyer.

The NHS Lothian’ corporate communications team was the biggest winner of the night, picking up six prizes.

Gold Awards

  • Crisis Communications Category: ‘NHS Lothian mounted a successful defence when the donation of an experimental scanner by a bank risked being obscured by a row over perceived preferential treatment for the bank’s employees.’

This followed the gifting of one of the world's best CT scanners to Edinburgh by the Royal Bank of Scotland, on the condition that RBS staff would have access to the machine for 25% of the time. NHS Lothian argued it would not be a problem, despite calls by Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) Margo McDonald for guidelines on commercial sector donations of health equipment to be clarified. The independent MSP for the Lothians raised concerns that philanthropy with conditions created a two-tier NHS.

  • Best Public Sector Campaign: The HIV Comeback Tour, a sensitive multimedia campaign alerting gay and bisexual men to the continuing dangers of HIV, promoting condom use and HIV testing.
  • Best Leaflet: Right Care, Right Time, Right Place, Your Guide to Round the Clock Care. This leaflet is produced in a number of languages to raise awareness of the alternatives to Accident and Emergency Departments.

Silver Awards

  • Best Website or Microsite: NHS Lothian’s web team, A Window on Our Services
  • Public Sector Team of the Year: NHS Lothian Corporate Communications Team

Aileen Cowden, communications officer for Lothian’s acute hospitals, became the first public sector PR specialist to win the title of Outstanding Young Communicator.[4]

John Brown, the Prime Minister’s older brother, treasurer of the CIPR and independent consultant, presented the Public Affairs award: ‘for campaigns designed to inform the public policy agenda or influence the legislative process.’[5] Indigo Strategic Communications, sponsors of the Outstanding Young Communicator Award, won gold in this category for the Making Waves Over Water Charges campaign. This ‘independent’ company which insists on a policy of ‘advocacy, not lobbying,’[6] successfully ensured the extension of water charge exemptions for churches beyond 2010. Tricker PR, who sponsored the award for Best Use of Media Relations, won two gold awards for the Portsoy Whistling Ban campaign.[7]
