durkin

HI Paul

interesting that Durkin has a film coming up on Africa--is there anywhere we can find further info on that as I couldn't see anything by googling? Also could you expand for the reader on in what way FrontPage mag is "notorious"? what is it notorious for?

I expanded the aid for Africa point as it's a nuanced argument and many NGOs doing good work in Africa agree with Durkin insofar as they think that food aid is often catastrophic for African farmers/economy and there is evidence that the Americans have actually killed off local markets (deliberately??) by dumping cheap food aid on them, at which point the US corporations move in and buy up all the farms and bring in the GM crops/monoculture cash crops for export. Then the rural people have to move into the towns where they become terribly poor. But it's what Durkin leaves out of his argument that shows his bias.

The section--

Global Swindler

--I assume is not yours and isn't ours (GM Watch's) either--it's largely unsourced and makes some very suable comments so will put out an alert for someone to help source it. It looks not to be a quick and easy job. But if you wanted to volunteer that would be great! ... a long shot I know.

irony?

I'm familiar with irony but there was nothing ironic I assume about calling FrontPage notorious--in that you probably meant that it really is notorious, and therefore it's not ironic. But as we've established in A Guide to Tone in the Help section, irony doesn't translate well on the web and seems often not to be understood at all by people whose first language is not English--many people will simply take the meaning at face value.

I have no interest in engaging in an insults contest. I've made my own edits to Durkin (and yes I'm all too familiar with him as we at GM Watch originated the oldest bit of the article) as I'm assuming you would rather not take editorial advice. As I'm sure you will see the original article has lots of critical analysis.
