Tommy Sheppard is the Scottish National Party (SNP) Member of Parliament for Edinburgh East. [1]

In the 2015 general election Sheppard defeated the Labour Party candidate Sheila Gilmore, who had held the seat since 2010 [2], with a majority of 9,106. [3]

Background

In 1993 Sheppard was appointed assistant general secretary of the Labour Party under John Smith but three years later was asked to leave by Tony Blair. [4] He removed himself from politics setting up a comedy club in Edinburgh called The Stand but the 2014 independence referendum prompted Sheppard to join the SNP and he became actively involved in the 'YES' campaign.
