There is a problem with the methodology... if there is a person with "fname midinit lastname" then you obtain very different results if one searches "fname midinit lastname" or "fname lastname" -- it is also difficult to reconcile the results. Also, google changes its criterion function over time, and the same search yields dramatically different results from day-day. The best approach is to use Lexis-Nexis and to restrict the media searched to, say, New York Times, IHT, LATimes, etc. This type of research is interesting, but... how to do it is another matter.

I agree. There are some methodological issues here. However I'm pretty confident we can get round them.
