Sarah Champion

Sarah Champion has been the Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Rotherham since 2012.

Champion was elected in November 2012 at a by-election caused by Denis MacShane's resignation. She was re-elected at the 2015 general election with a majority of 8,446 votes.[1]

Lobbying for MPs to have formal job descriptions

Since joining Parliament in 2012 Champion has ‘rapidly gained a reputation as one of Labour’s hardest-working backbench MPs' according to The Independent. [2]

Champion is lobbying for MPs to be given formal job descriptions and potentially even contracts when they are elected, which would tell them how many hours they would be expected to work. She says that it’s 'just not right' that all MPs draw the same salary and yet some can get away with doing very little constituency work. [2]

Stance on fracking

Champion's constituency includes two oil and gas licence blocks, both awarded to companies by the Oil and Gas Authority under the 14th licensing round in 2015. One of these was awarded to INEOS and one to IGas. In 2016 there were plans for two shale wells, 1 hrz frac well and to conduct 2D and 3D seismic surveying, but no applications are underway yet. [3]

Voting record

Champion has mostly been absent for votes on fracking in parliament. [4]

  • 26 January 2015: absent for a vote to make fracking companies apply for an environmental permit before conducting exploratory drilling. Also absent for a vote to amend the Infrastructure Bill to include a moratorium on fracking.
  • 11 February 2015: absent for a vote to require more pre-conditions for where fracking can take place.
  • 16 December 2015: voted against loosening the conditions for when fracking to take place in protected areas and national parks.
