London ISM

2004

  • 15 January 2004: 200 take part in vigil at Downing Street following death of Tom Hurndall on 13 January. Hurndall, an ISM volunteer from London had been shot by Israeli forces in Palestine in 2003.[1] Throughout 2003 and 2004 ISM campaigners are active in supporting the family of Tom Hurndall, including around the May 2004 trial of the Israeli solider who killed him.[2][3]
  • 20 March 2004: London ISM took part in the anti-war protest taking place, highlight the death of Rachel Corrie.[4]
  • 5 April 2004: protest at Rafael arms company, marking the anniversary of the shooting of ISM activist Brian Avery; one person briefly arrested.[4]
  • 3 April 2004: Hackney Palestine Solidarity Campaign & Rhythms of Resistance Samba band stall and demonstration, Church Street, Stoke Newington. London ISM do one of its monthly training for volunteers going to Palestine in nearby social centre.[5]
  • 23 April 2004: ISM London protest at Rafael Arms firm, Duke Street, London, using mock "Caterrorpillor" model digger. [6][7]
  • 15 May 2004: PSC "The Wall Must Fall" demonstration at Israeli Embassy and Trafalgar Squre; a national day of action by a large coalition of groups with speakers including Jeremy Corbyn MP, Richard Burden, MP, Jenny Tonge MP, Caroline Lucas MEP, Jocelyn Hurndall, and trade unionists and comedian Jeremy Hardy.[4][8][9]
  • 22 May 2004: "Protest Against Israeli Atrocities", Israeli Embassy, London organised by Palestine Solidarity Campaign.[10]
  • 25 June-19 August 2004: 'Freedom Summer Palestine 2004' campaign in Palestine against the Israeli occupation.[11]

  • 13 April 2005: International Day of Action Against Caterpillar - ISM action on Oxford Street targeting the John Lewis store selling Caterpillar brand footwear.[18][14] Rob is not recalled as having been on this.[21]
  • 16 April 2005: Caterpillar motorcade (?) Cavendish Square behind John Lewis in Oxford Street with Cindy and Craig Corrie, parents of slain ISM activist Rachel Corrie.[14]
  • 17 April 2005: ISM hosted meeting with Cindy and Craig Corrie at Café Cairo in Brixton.[14]
  • April 2005: London ISM training day planned for end of month.London ISM training day.[22]
  • 14-15 May 2005: London ISM training weekend.[14]
  • 21 May 2005: Palestine Solidarity Campaign "Free Palestine – End Israeli Occupation" march followed by rally in Trafalgar Square - Chaired by Jeremy Corbyn with multiple speakers including from trade unions.[23] This protest coincided with the "End The Torture - Bring the Troops Home Now" anti-war demonstration. A notice for it which appeared on Indymedia mentions Rob Harrison's performance name 'Boogie Knight' as playing at a benefit gig that evening:[24]

  • 19 December 2005: Four travel to Israel – three are detained pending deportation. Appeal against refusal to enter goes to court in Tel Aviv. One of those appealing, a South African national, is rejected because of history in anti-apartheid movement in UK, something lawyers said demonstrated that UK security services were sharing intelligence on activists with Israeli counterparts.[14]

2006

  • 23-31 January 2006: trial of blockaders of Carmel Agrexco. Various public events held including public meet on 25 January at University of London Union, Malet Street.[32] The protestors, known as the 'Uxbridge 7' are acquitted on 27 January with press conference held on 31st January, with considerable embarrassment to the company.[33]

  • 10-11 February 2007: Two day blockade at Carmel Agrexco, Hayes by the Boycott Israeli Goods campaign., with over 100 people taking part in openly organised protest.[58][59][60][61] Hackney Palestine Solidarity Campaign among those taking part.[62] Three protestors were arrested, though their cases dropped on 2 April 2007.[63]
  • 16 February 2007: Talk by Caoimhe Butterly & Guy Smallman on their six months spent in Lebanon, Conway Hall.[64]
  • February 2007: London ISM training weekend.
  • 10-11 March 2007: London ISM training weekend.[14]
  • 24 March 2007: B.I.G. vigil at Football Association headquarters, Soho Square, London, to protest against the England/Israel match, attended by 60 people.[65][66]
  • 21 April 2007: London ISM monthly meeting – SE London.[14]
  • 18-19 May 2007: London ISM training weekend.[14]
  • 5 June 2007: London ISM quiz night.[14]
  • 9 June 2007: Free Palestine march, London, with around thousands attending, marking the 40th anniversary of the 6 Day War, organised by the ENOUGH coalition.[67][68]
  • 30 June-1 July 2007: London ISM training weekend, Islington.[69]
  • 15 July 2007: occupation of Carmel Agrexco by nine protestors.[70]
  • 18 August 2007: 40 activists from the Camp for Climate Action at Heathrow, occupy Carmel Agrexco for three hours.[71] This action was conducted by anarchist group "State of Emergency". Six people arrested[72] - though their charges are dropped in March 2008.[73] A contemporary Indymedia report notes the action was carried out by State Of Emergency.[74]
  • 30-31 August 2007: London ISM training weekend.
  • 6 September 2007: Beyond the Apartheid Wall public meeting by PSC, London.[75]
  • 8 September 2007: Palestine Solidarity Campaign, B.I.G. and others hold vigil at Wembley Stadium protesting England/Israeli football match.[76][77]
  • 13-14 October 2007: London ISM 'Olive Harvest' training weekend.[78]
  • 19 October 2007: London ISM monthly meeting.[14]
  • 25 November 2007: Camden PSC Palestine Solidarity festival, Ossulton Street, NW1.[79]
  • 15 December 2007: vigil at Downing Street calling for an end to the Siege of Gaza, called by multiple organisations including PSC.[80]

London ISM also did stalls / events at the Glastonbury music festival, however Rob is not recalled as having taken part in this.[81]

London No Borders

2005-2006

  • 2 April 2005: No Borders demonstration, Clerkenwell Green, London, EC1.[82]
  • Second half of 2005: "The group begins by focusing mainly on anti-deportation campaigns and supporting undocumented workers. Late in the year there are several pickets outside Communications House reporting centre in Old Street."[83]
  • 29 January 2006: Vigil at Harmondsworth immigration centre, Heathrow following suicide of Bereket Yohannes there and harsh treatment of peaceful protests within the centre in the wake of the suicide.[83][84]
  • 1 March 2006: solidarity demonstration in support of detainees, with protestors marching from Passport Office, Ecclestone Square to Home Office, Marsham Street.[85]
  • 10 March 2006: 'No Borders No Nations' benefit night for No Borders, held at The Square.[86]
  • 11-12 March 2006: London NoBorders host first UK No Borders Network gathering at The Square squatted social centre, Holborn.[83][85][86]
  • 2006 London NoBorders working with other groups such as London Against Detention and National Coalition of anti-Deportation Campaign (NCADC) to form Campaign to Close the Heathrow Detention Centres.[83][87] The group is also supported by the squatted social centres The Square and rampART.
  • 8 April 2006: protests at Colnbrook/Harmondsworth immigration centres, Heathrow as part of global day of protest called by No Borders Australia. 300 people from across UK attend (timeline of events) and are met by large police operation who pen in the campaigners. Protest called by London NoBorders in conjunction with a number of other groups, with London No Borders UK putting on coaches.[88] Following the protest, detainees go on hunger-strike to complain about inhumane conditions in the centres, and London NoBorders focuses on supporting them.[83][89] Organisation of the three coaches was done from the Russell Square squatted social centre and that at the time much London No Borders activity was based there.[90]
  • 13 April 2006: meeting of No Borders Detainee Support Group, The Square social centre (21 Russell Square, London, WC1).[89]
  • 14 April 2006: Ethiopian Airlines offices had locks glued and slogans painted over its involvement in deportations.[91]
  • 15 April 2006: No Borders cafe & benefit night, The Square.[89]
  • 20 April 2006: London No Borders meeting.[89]
  • June 2006: demonstration at the News of the World, following the paper having lured undocumented workers onto a coach with the promise of work only to take them straight to Harmondsworth.[83]
  • July 2006: London No Borders supports the founding of Migrants' Solidarity Network.[92]
  • 22 July 2006: planning meeting for protest of 7 October, taking place at Transport House, Theobalds Road.[93]
  • 28 July 2006: London No Borders among those supporting a hunger strike at the Yarls Wood centre.[94][95]
  • 26 August 2006: No Borders Detainee Support Group training day, London Action Resource Centre, Fieldgate Street.[96]
  • 2 September 2006: London No Borders have a small picket of Communications House, Old Street, a reporting centre for asylum seekers known to seize and detain those attending. No Borders London hold monthly pickets on first Saturday of the month.[97] This building is also site of regular pickets by the Fight Racism, Fight Imperialism / Revolutionary Communist Group who at the time were also focusing on migration issues.
  • 3 September 2006: protest at Home Office, Marsham Street against deportations to Iraq; called by Coalition to Stop Deportations to Iraq and the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees.[98]
  • 9 September 2006: 'Queers Without Borders' benefit night, rampART Social Centre, with proceeds split with London No Borders.[99]
  • 15 September 2006: London No Borders benefit night to raise money for 7th October protests; held at rampART.[100]

  • 14 October 2006: Barbed Wire Britain conference, Human Rights Action Centre, New Inn Yard, EC2A. Barbed Wire Britain describes itself as a 'network to end migrant and refugee detention'.[108]
  • 21 October 2006: London No Borders doing meeting at Anarchist Bookfair, LVSC, Holloway Road, and supporting a workshop on asylum seekers and refugees at the Feminist Fightback conference, SOAS.[109]
  • 4 November 2006: small picket of Communications House.[97][110]
  • 4 November 2006: National Climate March demonstration, London (Campiagn Against Climate Change).[111] No Borders London produce leaflet for the march, drawing links between climate change and mass migration.[112]
  • 11 November 2006: No Borders Detainee Support Group meeting & training day, London Action Resource Centre.[113]
  • 18 November 2006: No One Is Illegal network national gathering, Manchester; encourages No Border groups to participate.[114]
  • 20 November 2006: No Borders London film and discussion night, Monday Love cafe, McGregor Road, W11.[115]
  • 28 November 2006: disturbances in Harmondsworth detention centre over the harsh conditions of detainees[116] lead to four people being detained. London No Borders among the groups that support the 'Harmondsworth 4', over the next year - they were finally acquitted in February 2008.[83][117][118]
  • 1-3 December 2006: London No Borders Weekend of Resistance and Solidarity.[119]
  • 1 December 2006: 'SOS Freedom!' demonstration called by No Borders London in solidarity with Harmondsorth detainees. The protest takes place at the London offices of Kalyx / Sodexho (25 Chapel Street, Edgeware Road, NW1), the company running Harmondsworth Detention Centre; 70-80 people attend with police out in force; no arrests. The protest was 'in solidarity with this week's uprising by detainees at Harmondsworth'.[120][121][122][123]
  • 1 December 2006: London No Borders benefit gig for Detainee Support Network at the rampART Social Centre.[122][121] Rob appears to have been part of the group of people putting this on.[124]
  • 2 December 2006: London No Borders monthly picket of Communications House.[121]
  • 3 December 2006: 'Harmondsworth Detention Centre Solidarty Action' - national protest at Harmondsworth Detention Centre called by Barbed Wire Britain & London No Borders.[116] No Borders London organise coaches for those going.[122][121]
  • 18 December 2006: demonstration at headquarters of Kalyx / Sodexho, called by London No Borders in support of detainees at Harmondsworth who were being abused by security there.[125]
  • 22 December 2006: call out for protest at Harmondsworth / Colnbrook detention centres on 10 February 2007.[126]

2007

  • 6 January 2007: planning meeting for demonstration of 10 February, held at Transport House, Theobolds Road.[121][127]
  • 13 January 2007: planning meeting for future mobilisations (known informally as 'October 7th group'), Transport House, Theobalds Road.[128]
  • 28 January 2007: planning meeting for protest of 10 February at Harmondsworth / Colnbrook, held at Transport House, Theobalds Road.[129]
  • 30 January 2007: demonstration against David Coleman, eugenicist and spokesperson for Migration Watch UK, King's College, London. Protest called by London No Borders.[130]
  • 3 February 2007: Close Harmondsworth evening of workshops, films & food[129] held at Vortex Social Centre, 139-141 Church Street, Stoke Newington, N16.[131] It including ex-detainees speakers and musician David Rovics.[132]Rob is present at this and may have DJ'd; he also appears to have had a role in the bar.[124]
  • 10 February 2007: 'Shut Harmondsworth & Colnbrook Detention Centres!' demonstration organised by the No Borders network.[83][133][126] London No Border organising coaches for this,[134] with 200-250 attending.[135][136][137] Video of march via Jason N. Parkinson Rob Harrison is present, and to date the only discovered photo of him comes from this protest. Also present was John McDonnell, MP who addressed the crowd video. An after-protest social event was also put on.
  • 16 February 2007: Detainee Support Group meeting, London Action Resource Centre.[138]
  • 17 February 2007: leafleting at Unite Against Fascism Conference.[139]
  • 10-11 March: National No Borders Gathering, Glasgow.[140][141]
  • 22 March 2007: G8 Planning Meeting, SOAS, London:.[142]
London No Borders and SOAS Autonomous Students Society invite you to a networking meeting to bring together groups in London organising against the G8 summit which will take place this June in Germany. This meeting intends to bring people together to discuss ideas and plans and how we might be able to work together and share information; both in terms of going to Germany and/or staying in London and organising local events and actions.
  • 21 April 2007: co-organised protest at Crawley against building of new detention centre (Brook House) at Gatwick Airport.[143] London and Brighton No Borders organise coaches, and 100 take part with minimal police presence (timeline of day).[144][145] This is the start of a campaign against the building of the centre.[146]

  • 1 May 2007: plays Mayday Party benefit gig at rampART along with DJ Rubbish. Event titled: 'A Benefit for Migrant and Refugee Rights: Regularisation For All & An End To Deportation & Detention'. This is in support of the group organising the protest the following week on 7 May. Rob advertises this on Urban75.net.[147]
  • 7 May 2007: March for Migrants & Refugee Rights, organised by the 'October 7th organising committee'; called to coincide with the National Day of Action and Celebration of Justice for Migrants called by civil society groups inlcuding London Citizens.[148] 5000 people including No Borders march.[149][150]
  • May 2007: call goes out for No Border Camp to take place at Gatwick.[144]
  • 19 May 2007: planning day for campaigning on regularisation of migrants in the European Union, South Bank University.[148] Organised by October 7th Coalition.[151] From this emerges the Papers For All coalition,[152] later called Campaign Against Immigration Controls and consisting of 'radical trade union activists, London No Borders and No One is Illegal'.[83][153]
  • 4 June 2007: activists from London No Borders take part in demonstration in Rostock, Germany against the G8.[154]
  • 8 June 2007: No Borders G8 Night at rampART, with benefit gig for Gatwick No Border Camp.[155]
People from No Borders London are taking part in protests against the G8 Summit in Rostock, Germany in the first week in June 2007. Demonstrations and meetings around migration and racism will be a major strand of the week's events.
On Friday 8th June, there will be a benefit night in London featuring report backs from the G8.

  • 31 August 2007: 'Critical Cash!' No Border Camp Benefit Gig, rampART including DJ set from 'Boogieknight (funk/reggae/hip-hop)'.[164]
  • 8 September 2007: 6th No Borders Camp planning meeting, rampART.[165]
  • 14 September 2007: No Border Camp Benefit Gig featuring Inner Terrestrials and others, rampART.[166]
  • 22 September 2007: international day of action against immigration prisons, called by UK No Borders network. Protest march from Crawley town centre to Tinsley House, near Gatwick Airport, as part of the Gatwick protest camp. Coaches put on from London.[168]
  • 22 October 2007: No Border film night, The Good Ship pub, Kilburn High Road, NW6, focusing on struggles of migrant workers in the UK.[169]
  • 27 October 2007: No Borders public meeting at Anarchist Bookfair, Queen Mary College, Mile End, E1. Rob take a lead in organising the after-party / social night at rampART, with proceeds to benefit both No Borders & rampART Social Centre. DJs including boogieknight.[170] He pushes the event on Urban75, and thanks those who attended on behalf of No Borders and the rampART collective.[171]
  • 2 November 2007: locks of building housing a company connected to the building of Brook House are glued shut. The action is claimed in the name of No Borders.[172]
  • 13 November 2007: Defend the Harmondsworth 4 public meeting, Institute of Race Relations, Leeke Street, WC1X, called by London No Borders, and supported by Barbed Wire Britain.[173] Over next few weeks, the group focuses on this campaign, including participating in a call for protest at the start of the trial on 7 January 2008.[118]
  • 18 December 2007: National day of action prevent dawn raids by immigration officers. A group of people, including from London No Borders blockade the Home Office on Marsham Street, protesting child detention and deportation.[174]
  • 31 December 2007: 'Fuck The Bailiffs! Smash The Borders!' New Years Eve party / benefit gig hosted by RampART & London No Borders, at rampART. Boogie Knight is not listed among the djs.[175]

State of Emergency

Below is a list of actions which the group put on its website as having participated in. Some were not claimed in any name, other were done explicitly under the name 'State of Emergency' such as the pickets of the Defence Industry Dinners.

2006

  • 22 July 2006: Attempted invasion of US Embassy.[176] This event took place during a larger march protesting Israel's attacks on Lebanon called by Stop The War Coalition.[177][178]
  • 1 Aug 2006: Emergency assembly against Lebanon/ Israel war.[179][180] This was a meeting which took place at London School of Economics which called for direct action against the Israeli invasion and lead to follow up actions being planned.[181][182]
  • 3 August 2006: Picket of Israeli arms company, Gilbert Street, London.[179][181]
  • 5 August 2006: Die-in outside Downing Street[183] & attempted invasion of US Embassy which took place during the Stop The War march in London.[179] [184]
  • 12 August 2006: Blockade of Brize Norton air base.[179] Four arrested.[185]
  • 15 August 2006: meeting of group at LARC to discuss SackParliament protest; name of group not yet decided on; minutes of meeting taken by Rob Harrison.[186]
  • 20 August 2006: meeting of group at rampART.[186]
  • 21 August 2006: Blockade of Foreign Office in protest against the Israeli invasion of Lebanon.[179] Five arrested following a 45 minute blockade; large police presence.[187][188][189] Those arrested were from the Clown Army
  • 22 August 2006: Meeting at London Action Resource Centre. This is the first recorded meeting of the group,[189] though there were been earlier ones.[190]
  • 16 September 2006: participated in Smash EDO march in Brighton.[191][192][193]
'State of Emergency' is a party being held at the rampART to raise funds for the Sack Parliament event on the 9th October. The party is a night of eclectic funk, hip hop, reggae, soul, disco, techno, house and everything else in between, noise, beats and more. DJ's on the night will include Stuart P ('Hit Or Miss'), boogie knight and Rass Smallmoney.[195]
  • 21 September 2006: participated in Smash EDO blockade.[191][196]
  • 23 September 2006: London Soldier picket, Chelsea Barracks. Forward Intelligence Team were waiting for the protestors and carried out a stop & search of them, claiming suspicion of going equipped for criminal damage.[191][197][198]
  • 6 October 2006: Sack Parliament film night at LARC.[199]
  • 7-8 October 2006: training days at LARC for those planning to go to the Sack Parliament demonstration.[199]

  • 9 October 2006: Sack Parliament demonstration, seeking to prevent the opening of Parliament:[176][199]
Over the past few years the UK parliament and government have led this country into war upon war, torn up age-old rights and made the division between rich and poor to grow ever wider. MPs and Lords return from their summer recess on October 9th. We need to ensure they can’t get back inside Parliament to stop them spreading their culture of fear.
The event was covered by the Evening Standard in the run up which mentioned the WOMBLES might be involved and that 'Police have been gathering intelligence on the demonstration plans for weeks.' The police response was being organised by Commander Robert Broadhurst.[200]
  • 31 October 2006: Defence Industry Dinner picket, Banqueting House.[201][202]
  • 6 December 2006: notes that it support the M19 group's call-to-action for 'A Global Day of Action for Iraq and Beyond' for 19th March 2007, encourages people to attend a public meeting in relation to this (20 December at ULU, Malet Street, London[203], and considering participating.[204] The M19 group appears to have been an ad hoc coalition of anti-arms trade and peace campaigners.
  • 19 December 2006: group social at Indian Veg, Islington. The group's weekly meetings on break for holidays, resuming on 9th January.[204]

2007

  • 11 February 2007: Carmel Agrexco blockade.[201] See above.
  • 19 March 2007: M19 noise demo at BearingPoint, a consultancy company doing work in Iraq.[201] Police arrive 20 minutes in and impose Section 14 order; three demonstrators were arrested for leafleting but later released without charge.[205]
  • 3 April 2007: film night at LARC.[204] On 4 April 2007, he posts on Urban75 that he had his car broken into the night before while at LARC.[206]
  • 11 April 2007: possible benefit gig to replace material stolen from his car.
  • 13 April 2007: Counter-Recruitment Picket, a leafleting demonstration at the Bloomsbury Way armed forces recruitment centre.[204]
  • 28 April 2007: Disarm DSEI public meeting at ULU, Malet Street advertised by StateOfEmergency.org.uk.[204]
  • 18 May 2007: Counter-Recruitment Picket, a leafleting demonstration at the Bloomsbury Way armed forces recruitment centre.[207][208]
  • 1-9 June 2007: members of the group travel to Rostock & Heilgendamm in Germany to participate in the protests against the G8 summit.[208] Other undercovers from the UK attended, including Mark Kennedy.
  • 19 June 2007: 'No Risk - No Fun', film night on G8 protests hosted by State of Emergency at the London Action Resource Centre.[209]
  • 3 July 2007: 'SOCPA - the movie', film night at London Action Resource Centre, hosted by State of Emergency.[209]
  • 15 July 2007: 'Plunder Inspection', Carmel Agrexco.[208].[210] See above.
  • 29 July 2007: EDO MBM premises in Brighton had locks glued and D-locks placed on gates.[209], conducted by State of Emergency Brighton group[211]
  • 30 July 2007: Counter-Recruitment Picket, Bloomsbury.[209] Action done to coincide with Disarm DSEi call for two days of action against the arms trade.[212]
  • 18 August 2007: 20 activists from across the UK, including London and the Heathrow Climate Camp, then taking place, successfully blockade the entrance of Carmel Agrexco in Hayes, Middlesex. A press release claims the action in the name of the anarchist group State Of Emergency; four people arrested.[213] The State of Emergency website also says the approximately 60 protesters were under their banner, and done to coincide with the Camp for Climate Action.[214] Six arrested had their charges dropped in March 2008.[215] Action claimed in name of State of Emergency.[74]
  • 11-14 September 2007: the group participates in various actions in relation to the DSEi arms fair.[216] Details of actions
  • 1 September 2007: Counter-Recruitment Picket, Bloomsbury.[215]
  • 8 October 2007: anti-SOCPA demonstration, Parliament Square, coinciding with protest organised by Stop The War Coalition to mark opening of Parliament.
  • 31 October 2007: Defence Industry Dinner picket.[216]
  • 2 December 2007: the group hosts a public meeting at Connaught House, London School of Economics to discuss Prime Minister Gordon Brown's plans to restrict further protest around the Houses of Parliament.[217][218]
