Richard Cottrell has been Director General of the World Sugar Research Organisation since 2004 and was Director of the Sugar Bureau and a key sugar lobbyist in the UK until 2008. He was also Chairman of the Scientific and Communications Committee of the World Sugar Research Organisation from 1993 until 2004. Prior to joining the Bureau in 1993, 'he held senior appointments at the Leatherhead Food Research Association (1989-1993) and the British Nutrition Foundation (1984-1989). From 1971-1984 he was engaged in research into the origins of cancer and a number of toxicological issues, first at University College London and later at the British Industrial Biological Research Association. He graduated with First Class honours in Chemistry from University College London and went on to a PhD in Biological Chemistry and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Biochemistry.'[1]

After graduating in Chemistry from University College London, Richard took his doctorate in biochemistry. His interest in diet and nutrition was kindled during 13 years working in cancer research... He was an Officer of the Nutrition Society from 1992 to 2000. Richard is currently Chairman of the Working Group of the Federation of European Sugar Manufacturers and was Chairman of the Scientific and Communications Committee of the World Sugar Research Organisation from 1993 until 2004. Richard was appointed Director-General of the WSRO in May 2004.[2]
