Phil Woolas
Phil Woolas was the Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Oldham East & Saddleworth from 1997 to 2010.
Thrown out of Parliament
Woolas won his seat at the 2010 general election by 103 votes, however two High Court judges overturned the result and ordered a by-election after Elwyn Watkins, the defeated Liberal Democrats candidate, accused him of exploiting racial tensions in the area by falsely claiming Watkins was courting Islamic extremists. Woolas, who was barred from standing for public office for three years, denied the offence and claimed he would fight the charge but the Labour Party immediately disowned him for 'telling lies' and said it would not support his appeal.[1]
Parliamentary roles
He served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Lord Gus MacDonald, Minister of State for Transport, Lord Commissioner of the Treasury, deputy leader of the House of Commons, Minister of State for Local Government and Regeneration, Minister of State for Civil Contingency, Minister of State for Environment and Minister of State for Immigration and Customs. He also served as Minister for the North West of England.[2]
