In January 2017, Hurd said before the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee that 'we owe it to ourselves' [the UK] to attempt to produce shale gas as successfully as the US has, and that 'it would be irresponsible to future generations not to answer the question can we do it' for reasons of energy insecurity.
