Jonathan Hill

Jonathan Hill, Baron Hill of Oareford, (born 24 July 1960) was created a Life Peer in May 2010 and appointed Parliamentary Secretary of State for Schools in the Department for Education the same day.[1]

In 2012 Hill was appointed Leader of the House of Lords and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He stepped down from the Government in July 2014, when he was nominated to become the UK's European Commissioner.[2]

Background

Hill is a former lobbyist for Lowe Bell Communications (1989–91) and the Bell Pottinger Group from 1994 until 1998. He subsequently became a founding director of Quiller Consultants.

He is a former political secretary to Conservative prime minister John Major in the 1990s.

European role

On September 10, 2014 Lord Hill was presented as designated EU Commissioner for the Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union portfolio in the forthcoming Juncker Commission.
