James Tooley has been described as "the high priest of privatised education in Britain".[1]

He is the director of the E.G. West Centre at Newcastle University and a member of the academic advisory board of the Taxpayers' Alliance.[2] He has also been the professor of education policy at Newcastle University since 1998. According to the copy of his C.V. held by Newcastle University he is also an advisor to Reform, Civitas, the Institute of Economic Affairs, and the Globalisation Institute.[3]He is also the founding director of the The Education Fund and Orient Global.[4]

Background

Tooley has been working in the field of education for over 25 years beginning with a teaching post in Zimbabwe after he left university. According to his E.G. West Centre biography he 'works to assist in improving entrepreneurs' access to loans and improvement of the curriculum for budget private schools' and 'to bring private schools for low income families to the top of the agenda when discussing Education for All'.[5]

Activities

James Tooley attended a Heritage Foundation event entitled 'Resource Bank 2004' in 2004 on behalf of the E.G. West Centre. The subject was 'Social Entrepreneurship: Building Constituencies for Limited Government'.[6]
