The Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) was founded in 1991 as 'an independent, non-partisan "think and do tank" dedicated to strengthening the foundations of Israeli democracy.' According to its website, 'IDI acts to promote the values and norms vital for Israel's identity as a Jewish and democratic state.'[1]

Israeli conservatives have accused the IDI of a left-wing bias. Jerusalem councilman Yair Gabbai stated in May 2013: ""This is a politically driven institute that systematically fights any legislation promoted by the Right."[2]
