Mitchell came under investigation as a potential double agent during his tenure as Deputy Director General (DDG) of MI5. In May 1963, Arthur Martin and Peter Wright deduced that he was a potential Soviet mole, and he was placed under surveillance in his own office until his retirement on 6 September 1963.[1]
