Frank Hall was the military secretary of the Ulster Volunteer Force before the First World War, during which he became MI5's main Irish expert.[1]

Following the incorporation of the UVF into the British Army on the outbreak of war, Hall was offered 'a job in Military Intelligence by a top Army Unionist', according to writer Jeff Dudgeon.[2]
