Dentons is a giant US law firm operating in 50-plus countries, with approximately 7,700 lawyers. It is the world's largest law firm measured by number of lawyers.

Brexit

Dentons says it is 'uniquely placed' to provide counsel to its European and non-European clients on Brexit 'as they navigate the potential implications of this momentous and unprecedented decision'.[1]

In relation to Brexit Dentons says its focus is on 'cutting through the noise and providing practical advice to clients on what happens next, what the legal and commercial implications are across different industries and sectors, and what they need to be thinking about as they adapt to the new business.' environment.’

The firm has commented on the implications of Brexit for various sectors, including the energy sector. On this it said: 'EU membership undoubtedly constrains UK policy choices in a way that some find detrimental to UK business and/or consumer interests... If the UK were to seek its fortune outside both the EU and the EEA, Government would be able, at least from a legal point of view, to introduce some very radical changes to current energy policies – and in some cases it might well be tempted to do so... There will be no substitute, as energy Brexit unfolds, for keeping a close eye on what is proposed in relation to each policy area (even if it is not presented directly as a response to Brexit).'[2]

James Dallas, partner at Dentons, is a member of the legal panel of the Red Tape Initiative, set up to identify and cut EU regulations – 'red tape' – that it sees as 'impeding business' as part of the Brexit process.

Lobbying network

In September 2016 Dentons announced it was setting up a worldwide network of lobbying firms - Nextlaw Global Public Affairs Network - to begin operation in early 2017. The platform launched with 60 public affairs PR firms spanning 100 countries, and expects more to come. It also connects these lobbying firms to thousands of Dentons lawyers as well as over 25,000 lawyers across 475 law firms that are members of the Nextlaw Global Referral Network.

UK lobbying firms Portland PR and GK Strategy were first in line to join the network. Portland’s Brexit unit and Dentons previously co-hosted a discussion on the political, policy and financial implications of Brexit.

US lobbying tie up

Dentons has linked up with US lobbying firm Definers Public Affairs to provide a joint offereing – '3D Global Affairs' – which, it says, 'allows clients to be the disruptor by combining political intelligence, legal advisors, campaign-style tactics, lobbying, governmental affairs, research, and communications into one unique offering'.[3]

Services they provide promise to 'disrupt The Political, Regulatory, And Communications Environment Over The Long-Term' for clients. Its services include: 'Legal Services'; 'Government Relations And Lobbying Support'; 'Communications And Rapid Response'; 'War Room Style Media Monitoring', which monitors a wide-range of media platforms on a continuous basis; and 'Campaign Style Opposition Research', which, it says provides clients with 'dossiers on opponents, competitors and agitators'.[4]

3D Global Affairs, it says, gives clients 'global reach to shape public affairs debates around the world'.[5]

Definers Public Affairs opened a London 'sister agency' in 2017 called UK Policy Group.
