Chris Bryant

Chris Bryant has been the Labour Party MP for Rhondda since 2001, retaining his seat in the 2015 general election with a majority of 7,455. [1] In May 2015, Bryant was appointed shadow secretary of state for culture, media and sport. [2]

Following the 2015 leadership election, Bryant was appointed shadow Commons leader, having declined the post of shadow defence secretary, citing disagreements over defence issues with newly-elected Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. [3]

Background

Bryant joined the Labour Party in 1996, after a career in the Church and as a writer, as chair of the Christian Socialist Movement and a Hackney Councillor. [4] Since being elected in 2001, Bryant has held various parliamentary roles including deputy leader of the House of Commons (2008-09), parliamentary under-secretary (2009), shadow minister for Europe (2010), shadow minister for home affairs (2011-13) and shadow minister for work and pensions (2013-14). [2]

A summer evening with lobbyists

In June 2015 Labour MPs including Bryant, Chuka Umunna, Tristram Hunt, Emma Reynolds and Andy Burnham and Labour peer Lord Mandelson, along with Conservative MP Sajid Javid and Mayor of London candidate Sol Campbell attended the Financial Times summer bash at the Mondrian London hotel. Also in attendance were high-profile lobbyists Charles Lewington (founder and MD of Hanover Communications), Tim Allan (MD of Portland) and John Lehal (founder and MD of Insight Consulting Group).[5]
