Charlie Burgess
Charles William John Burgess (born 2 January 1954), known as Charlie, is a journalist turned PR consultant who worked at the Guardian the Independent and the Daily Mail in a range of roles, including sports editor, news editor, media editor, travel editor and features executive. In 2006 he left the Independent to work as a PR consultant.[1]
Journalism career
- Burgess worked on and off with the Guardian since the 1970s.
- managing editor at the Independent and the Independent on Sunday, during the years running up to 1995. In 1995 he joined the Daily Mail as an executive on the features desk.
- returned to the Guardian in 1999 as the editor in charge of the Saturday sections.
- In 2005 he left his post as associate editor of ??? to become managing editor at the Independent and the Independent on Sunday
- Left the Independent for PR industry by joining Edtorial Intelligence.
Connections
Burgess says he is ‘great friends’ with Simon Kelner (Independent editor-in-chief) and Alan Rusbridger (Guardian editor).[2]
Journalism
Burgess wrote about leisure and consumer topics. His list of Guardian articles includes Football, The Who, wine, motorbikes and online share dealing.[3]
PR
In 2006 Burgess joined Editorial Intelligence as an ‘editorial consultant’ and was appointed to the board on 15 September 2006.[4] In a press release from Editorial Intelligence in January 2007, Burgess is described as a 'Shareholder' and 'Editorial Director'. [5] Leaving the Independent Burgess said: “It is a very difficult decision to make because I love working here. It is a brilliant newspaper and the editor and management do a brilliant job. But I feel it is time to do something new. I have several projects in line which I cannot talk about.”[6]
With Editorial Intelligence Burgess made his first step towards the PR industry. His second step came in July 2006 when he joined Jefferson Communications as a director [7]
Personal life
Burgess is married to Anne Spackman, the managing editor of The Times.[8]
