Background

Business in the Community is a Prince's Charity set up by the Prince of Wales. It's stated aim is to 'inspire, engage, support and challenge' its member companies 'to improve their positive impact on society' in 4 areas: workplace, marketplace, environment and community[1]. According to its website, Business in the Community works with companies who make a commitment to a) 'Inspire, innovate and lead by sharing learning and experience of responsible business', b) 'Impact on key social issues through collaborative action in areas of greatest need' and c) 'Integrate, manage and measure responsible business practice'[2]. In 2009 their top priorities are stated as being to tackling climate change and develop the talent and skills of the existing and future workforce[3].

Senior Management

  • Stephen Howard - Chief Executive. In 2004/05 Howard became Group Chief Executive of Novar PLC which was sold on to Honeywell in 2005. His previous roles have included serving as a practising lawyer and partner with Alder, Pollock & Sheehan Inc (Providence, USA) and a variety of different roles (including Group Chief Executive) with the Cookson Group PLC.
  • Peter Lambert - Deputy Chief Executive.

In 2009, BITC advertise that they have over 800 members in sectors which includes Aerospace & Defence; Chemicals; Media, Marketing & PR; Mining; Oil & Gas; Pharmaceuticals & Biotech; Tobacco; Utilities, along with retail, food, management consultant, auto industry, education, financial, health, legal, leisure, construction and public service sectors.
