In 2009, while Reitan was Executive Vice President of Alcoa Elkem's subsidiary Elkem Aluminium was sold to Alcoa. He was heavily involved in the project which was completed in 2006. The project caused some of the biggest protests Iceland had ever seen over the Kárahnjúkar Dam, which flooded more than 60km of rare wilderness highlands to power it.[6]
